The Autonomous Authority "The River Administration of Lower Danube" Galați is a Romanian legal person and functions as an autonomous authority under the authority of the Ministry of Transport, by following the provisions of HGR 492/2003, with the international conventions and agreements to which Romania is a party. AFDJ Galați fulfills the function of authority of waterways on the Romanian sector of the Danube from the entrance to the country, at river km 1,075, to the exit in the Black Sea, on the Sulina arm, on the navigable arms of the Danube, Borcea, Bala, Măcin, Vâlciu, Caleia, on the Chilia arm with the secondary arms, on the Sf. Gheorghe arm with the rectification channels and on the secondary arms of the Sulina Channel called the Old Danube. In its capacity as a waterway authority and accordance with the provisions of the Convention on the Danube Navigation Regime, AFDJ Galați aims to ensure the minimum navigational depths through maintenance dredges, to ensure coastal and floating signaling, to carry out hydrographic measurements, to carry out construction and repair works for hydro-technical constructions, to ensure the navigation conditions, to ensure the pilotage of the maritime vessels on the Danube sector between Sulina and Braila and in the ports located in this sector, to make available to all users the naval transport infrastructure, as well as to take them to fulfillment of obligations that fall to the Romanian state from the international conventions and agreements to which Romania is a party and which have been entrusted to them by delegation of competence by the Ministry of Transport.
